Q. What is the faculty sick leave bank?

A.
If any bargaining unit member should exhaust her/his accrued sick leave, he/she may draw from this bank pursuant to guidelines developed by the Faculty Association and use the allowance from the bank as if the days were accrued.  A bargaining unit member may use no more than a total of one hundred thirty (130) days of sick leave in any calendar year and/or for the same continuing illness.

Q. Do temporary faculty members get sick leave?

A. Yes.  Full-time temporary faculty accrue 10 days of sick leave per year.  If an employee is less than full-time but at least half-time, her/his accrual is prorated.  Charge sick leave for any missed classes or other work obligations due to illness based on her/his employment status.  For instance, if an employee is half-time, charge 4 hours sick leave for each day absent.

Note, however, that temporary faculty employed at
less than half-time are not entitled to sick leave pay.  If an absence occurs, the chairperson should determine whether it is appropriate to deduct wages for missed work or allow the employee to incorporate missed class material in the remainder of the semester.  Contact FPS if wages should be deducted for the absence.
