The Central Michigan University Honors Program was established in 1961 to provide an academic challenge commensurate with the capabilities of high achieving students at the university. The aim of honors study is to offer students learning experiences that are qualitatively different from non-honors courses, and to create a stimulating learning environment for highly motivated students. The program has a current enrollment of 800 students from across all disciplines. An overview of the program can be found on the CMU Honors website www.cmich.edu/honors/.
In 1989, Central Michigan University created the Centralis Scholarship Program. This program signifies the university's commitment to encourage and recognize the intellectual potential of outstanding students and academically strengthen the university. It awards merit-based scholarships to incoming freshmen who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance and extracurricular involvement.
The Honors Program staff includes a Director, an Associate Director, a 10 month academic advisor, 1.5 FTE clerical staff, and student assistants. The director reports to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and holds a full-time 12 month faculty appointment. The new Director will begin no later than August 16, 2010.
Primary responsibilities of the
Director include:
*Advocacy for the Honors Program and high academic standards;
*Oversight and administration of the Honors and Centralis Scholarship
Programs to include: recruitment and selection of Honors faculty
and students, oversight of honors course schedule and master course
syllabi, preparing and managing budgets, strengthening and diversifying
course offerings, course scheduling, assessment of program outcomes, and
supervision of office staff;
*Instruction of Honors seminars, supervision of honors projects, and
academic advisement and mentoring of honors students;
*Work with an advisory council of faculty, students and staff;
*Coordination of on-campus events for Honors students and faculty,
including graduation and summer orientation for new students;
*Assist in the planning and organizing of the Centralis Scholarship
competition process;
*Works with various student services offices (e.g., Admissions,
Scholarships and Financial Aid, Academic Advising, Residence Life, etc.)
to coordinate scholarship and recruiting activities;
*Assists with on-campus event planning coordination which involves the
Honors Program;
*Develops and participates in the marketing, recruitment and public
relations activities representing the Honors Program and CMU in general
to on- and off-campus groups;
*Oversight of the Honors Program Alumni Board and cultivation of
relationships with Honors alumni;
*Supervises, in coordination with Development, fund raising efforts for
honors scholarships and research.
Qualifications: Each candidate must possess the terminal degree in his or her academic discipline, a record of sustained excellence in undergraduate teaching and advising, a commitment to liberal education and a record of creative academic leadership. Excellent communication skills including effective public speaking and an ability to communicate with a variety of audiences is essential. CMU Honors Faculty status is required. Experience developing curricula is highly desirable. Although the position is open to anyone who has experience as a CMU faculty member, tenured faculty with Associate or Full Professor rank are preferred.
