Founding Dean - School of Medicine

Central Michigan University (CMU) invites applications and nominations for its Founding Dean of the allopathic School of Medicine.  A charter class of 100 students is anticipated in the fall of 2012.  The CMU School of Medicine will offer a community-based academic program preparing exceptionally well-qualified physicians to meet the needs of mid- and northern-Michigan.  We are seeking a dynamic leader and administrator who will play a critical role in shaping the vision of the School of Medicine and will become the catalyst for securing the resources needed to accomplish the school's aims of serving a population of two million underserved people (see www.cmich.edu/med).

Established in 1892, Central Michigan University is located in Mount Pleasant.  This doctoral research university is the fourth largest institution in Michigan and among the 100 largest public universities nationally.  CMU is a $380 million enterprise, offers more than 200 academic programs, including 12 doctoral programs, and has nationally recognized programs in entrepreneurship, journalism, music, audiology, teacher education, psychology, physician assistant, and physical therapy (see www.cmich.edu).

The University operates a network of CMU Learning Centers in more than 60 locations throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.  Programs are offered at the undergraduate, masters, specialist and doctoral levels, including non-degree certifications.

CMU's Division I athletics program is a member of the Mid-American Conference (MAC).  CMU Public Broadcasting operates 10 television and seven radio stations with the largest geographic reach of any Public Broadcasting system in the country.  CMU is also home to the headquarters of Special Olympics Michigan.

Trustees approved $22 million in funding for a 62,000-square-foot addition to the existing Health Professions Building.  The board previously approved a total of $2 million for architectural and engineering services, for a total project cost of $24 million.  The Health Professions Building wing will provide the space needed for the university to open and operate a medical school.  Completion of the addition is scheduled for spring 2012 and is designed to meet Liaison Committee on Medical Education accreditation standards and for silver level LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.  Funding for the project will come from gifts, grants and university reserves.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

As the chief academic officer of CMU's School of Medicine, the dean will report to the provost.  The dean will provide strong, hands-on leadership and guidance to the school, to assure that the school's programs are relevant to the university's mission, responsive to the needs of the state, and of superior quality.  The dean will be responsible for the fiscal integrity of the School of Medicine, which includes identifying and securing sources of funding in support of its educational, clinical and research agendas.  The founding dean will direct the development of all aspects of the curriculum.  Among the primary and critical responsibilities of the dean will be to facilitate strong productive relationships with affiliated hospitals and other academic departments at CMU to ensure high quality medical education, advance patient-centered care, recruit associate deans and promote clinical innovation.  The successful candidate must have the leadership and administrative skills to establish a strong, innovative medical education program that gains LCME accreditation in a timely manner and subsequent national recognition.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates for the position of Founding Dean, School of Medicine will be evaluated according to the following criteria.

Required:

*M.D. degree
*Track record of teaching, service and scholarly achievements in medical education
*Proven abilities in the leadership and administration of a medical education program with a track record of successful internal and external collaborations
*Substantive experience in medical education programs
*Substantive experience in the LCME accreditation process
*Exceptional management and business/operational skills, including finances/budgets and strategic planning, successfully applied in a complex organizational context such as a hospital or academic health center
*Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including positive interpersonal skills
*Demonstrated ability in the recruitment, development and retention of medical education and related personnel
*Demonstrated commitment to diversity
*Track record of community engagement and successful fund-raising

Preferred Qualifications:

*3-5 years of administrative experience at the Dean, Associate Dean or department chair level at an LCME accredited medical school
*Demonstrated experience managing and/or establishing faculty practice plans
*Experience establishing successful new, innovative programs
*Experience in a community-based medical program
*Experience in medical education curriculum development

Associate Dean / Medical Education and Faculty Development - School of Medicine

The Associate Dean/Medical Education and Faculty Development functions as an at-will employee under the general supervision of the Dean of the School of Medicine, and works in cooperation with appropriate university offices and within existing university policies, procedures, and practices.

Responsibilities:
*Delegated responsibility for oversight and management of the educational mission of the School of Medicine including strategic, financial, and faculty planning.
*Represent the dean on administrative committees where appropriate.
*Assist with planning and implementation of strategies leading to successful accreditation of the educational program leading to the M.D. degree.
*Provide leadership in educational program development, management, and evaluation.
*Work collaboratively with the Associate Dean/Clinical Affairs and Hospital Relations to assure the availability of high quality clinical education experiences for students and appropriate tools for faculty growth and professional success.
*Provide leadership in the development, implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive faculty development program.
*Provide supervision of and support for the appointment, reappointment, promotion, and tenure process for School of Medicine faculty.
*Provide supervision and oversight of the faculty bylaws process.
*Work collaboratively with the senior leadership, faculty, and staff of university offices regarding policies, procedures, and issues.

*Develop and maintain relationships with clinical affiliates in support of the mission of the School of Medicine.
*Responsible for development, growth and advancement of the faculty practice plan.

*Provide leadership for the development of facility plans for the School of Medicine and provide oversight of School of Medicine capital projects.

Dean - College of Education and Human Services

Central Michigan University is seeking a highly accomplished individual with the vision and proven administrative expertise to lead and advance the College of Education and Human Services to new levels of national prominence.

The College of Education and Human Services was founded in 1997 and brought together the departments of Counseling and Special Education; Educational Leadership; Human Environmental Studies; Recreation, Parks and Leisure Services Administration; and Teacher Education and Professional Development.  The Dean serves as the official head of the unit for the university's accredited teacher preparation programs as well as other accredited programs in the College.  The university's Center for Charter Schools also reports to the Dean.  Instruction in the College is offered through MA and MS level degree programs in all departments and the doctoral level in Educational Leadership.  There are a number of programs which are offered off-campus and online.  There are approximately 175 regular and non tenure-track faculty and 2,293 self-declared majors in the College.  The College has an operating budget of nearly $45 million and is housed in a new 2009 state of the art facility which prides itself on being the first LEED certified building on campus.

The Dean is the chief academic officer of the College, reports directly to the Executive Vice President/Provost, and serves on the Council of Deans.  The successful candidate will be expected to lead strategic and long-range planning efforts and work with others to implement change, including:  raising standards for student and faculty performance; recruiting new faculty who are committed to strong scholarship and teaching; fostering faculty development; increasing relevant and prominent scholarship and external grant activity; encouraging, strengthening and broadening alumni and community relations; advancing the College's successful development/fundraising portfolio; and promoting international partnerships.  The Dean is also expected to advance diversity and facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration both within the College and between it and the other CMU colleges.  Currently accredited by NCATE, the Teacher Education program is in the process of seeking TEAC Accreditation.  The Dean will be expected to know and support accreditation efforts across all relevant disciplines and programs in the College.

Required qualifications for this position include: academic credentials in a discipline and academic achievements appropriate for appointment as a tenured full professor in a unit within the College; a record of administrative and academic leadership success; strong budgeting and financial planning experience; a record of innovative program development; an understanding of and commitment to the use of appropriate technology within the classroom; a strong record of advocacy for diversity; demonstrated commitment to shared governance; evidence of effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; demonstrated commitment to advocacy for the disciplines represented within the College; and an understanding of and commitment to public higher education.

Associate Dean - College of Communication and Fine Arts

Central Michigan University is seeking a highly accomplished individual with the vision and administrative expertise to assist the dean in leading and advancing the College of Communication and Fine Arts to new levels of national prominence.

The Associate Dean reports to the College Dean and works with Department Chairpersons, Unit Directors and other members of the College Leadership Team.  The Associate Dean serves as a Senior Officer of Central Michigan University and as the chief academic officer of the College in the absence of the Dean.

General Statement of Duties
The Associate Dean provides support to the Dean in areas such as, but not necessarily limited to:  curriculum, budgeting, planning, program development, space allocation and remodeling; faculty reappointment, tenure, and promotion actions; faculty development; recruiting of new faculty and staff; recruitment of students; the acquisition of development monies; facilitating of research and grant writing; and supervision of college staff.  The Associate Dean will be assigned leadership responsibility in some of these areas, as determined by the College Dean.  The Associate Dean may be assigned other duties, reasonably related to the operation of the College, at the discretion of the College Dean.

Required Qualifications:
Terminal degree and tenured at the level of associate or full professor in a department/unit within the College of Communication and Fine Arts; familiarity with the varied needs of the departments/units within the college; demonstrated history of high-quality teaching, scholarship/creative activity, and service; ability and willingness to represent the interests of the College to all constituencies; demonstrated commitment to collaboration with members of the College and University community; demonstrated successful interpersonal skills; well-developed oral and written communication skills; demonstrated history of, and commitment to, working successfully as part of a team; demonstrated leadership skills; experience with mediation and conflict resolution; successful prior administrative experience; demonstrated commitment to diversity.

Desired Qualifications:
Experience with academic budgeting and planning; knowledge of collective bargaining principles, particularly in higher education; experience with successful implementation/application of information technology to the academic enterprise; experience with fund raising (preferably external).
