Founding Dean - School of Medicine
Central Michigan University (CMU) invites applications and
nominations for its Founding Dean of the allopathic School of
Medicine. A charter class of 100 students is anticipated in
the fall of 2012. The CMU School of Medicine will offer a
community-based academic program preparing exceptionally
well-qualified physicians to meet the needs of mid- and
northern-Michigan. We are seeking a dynamic leader and
administrator who will play a critical role in shaping the vision of
the School of Medicine and will become the catalyst for securing the
resources needed to accomplish the school's aims of serving a
population of two million underserved people (see

Established in 1892, Central Michigan University is located in Mount
Pleasant. This doctoral research university is the fourth
largest institution in Michigan and among the 100 largest public
universities nationally. CMU is a $380 million enterprise,
offers more than 200 academic programs, including 12 doctoral

entrepreneurship, journalism, music, audiology, teacher education,

Programs are offered at the undergraduate, masters, specialist and
doctoral levels, including non-degree certifications.
CMU's Division I athletics program is a member of the Mid-American
Conference (MAC). CMU Public Broadcasting operates 10
television and seven radio stations with the largest geographic
reach of any Public Broadcasting system in the country. CMU is
also home to the headquarters of Special Olympics Michigan.
Trustees approved $22 million in funding for a 62,000-square-foot
addition to the existing Health Professions Building. The
board previously approved a total of $2 million for architectural
and engineering services, for a total project cost of $24 million.
The Health Professions Building wing will provide the space needed
for the university to open and operate a medical school.
Completion of the addition is scheduled for spring 2012 and is
designed to meet Liaison Committee on Medical Education
accreditation standards and for silver level LEED certification from
the U.S. Green Building Council. Funding for the project will
come from gifts, grants and university reserves.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
As the chief academic officer of CMU's School of Medicine, the
dean will report to the provost. The dean will provide strong,
hands-on leadership and guidance to the school, to assure that the
school's programs are relevant to the university's mission,
responsive to the needs of the state, and of superior quality.
The dean will be responsible for the fiscal integrity of the School
of Medicine, which includes identifying and securing sources of
funding in support of its educational, clinical and research
agendas. The founding dean will direct the development of all
aspects of the curriculum. Among the primary and critical
responsibilities of the dean will be to facilitate strong productive
relationships with affiliated hospitals and other academic
departments at CMU to ensure high quality medical education, advance
patient-centered care, recruit associate deans and promote clinical
innovation. The successful candidate must have the leadership
and administrative skills to establish a strong, innovative medical
education program that gains LCME accreditation in a timely manner
and subsequent national recognition.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates for the position of Founding Dean, School of Medicine
will be evaluated according to the following criteria.
Required:
*M.D. degree
*Track record of teaching, service and scholarly achievements in
medical education
*Proven abilities in the leadership and administration of a medical
education program with a track record of successful internal and
external collaborations
*Substantive experience in medical education programs
*Substantive experience in the LCME accreditation process
*Exceptional management and business/operational skills, including
finances/budgets and strategic planning, successfully applied in a
complex organizational context such as a hospital or academic health
center

Dean - College of Education and Human Services
Central Michigan University is seeking a highly accomplished
individual with the vision and proven administrative expertise to
lead and advance the College of Education and Human Services to new
levels of national prominence.
The College of Education and Human Services was founded in 1997 and
brought together the departments of Counseling and Special
Education; Educational Leadership; Human Environmental Studies;
Recreation, Parks and Leisure Services Administration; and Teacher
Education and Professional Development. The Dean serves as the
official head of the unit for the university's accredited teacher
preparation programs as well as other accredited programs in the
College. The university's Center for Charter Schools also
reports to the Dean. Instruction in the College is offered
through MA and MS level degree programs in all departments and the
doctoral level in Educational Leadership. There are a number
of programs which are offered off-campus and online. There are
approximately 175 regular and non tenure-track faculty and 2,293
self-declared majors in the College. The College has an
operating budget of nearly $45 million and is housed in a new 2009
state of the art facility which prides itself on being the first
LEED certified building on campus.
The Dean is the chief academic officer of the College, reports
directly to the Executive Vice President/Provost, and serves on the
Council of Deans. The successful candidate will be expected to
lead strategic and long-range planning efforts and work with others
to implement change, including: raising standards for student
and faculty performance; recruiting new faculty who are committed to
strong scholarship and teaching; fostering faculty development;
increasing relevant and prominent scholarship and external grant
activity; encouraging, strengthening and broadening alumni and
community relations; advancing the College's successful
development/fundraising portfolio; and promoting international
partnerships. The Dean is also expected to advance diversity
and facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration both within the
College and between it and the other CMU colleges. Currently
accredited by NCATE, the Teacher Education program is in the process
of seeking TEAC Accreditation. The Dean will be expected to
know and support accreditation efforts across all relevant
disciplines and programs in the College.

Associate Dean - College of Communication and Fine Arts

Central Michigan University is seeking a highly accomplished
individual with the vision and administrative expertise to assist
the dean in leading and advancing the College of Communication and
Fine Arts to new levels of national prominence.
The Associate Dean reports to the College Dean and works with
Department Chairpersons, Unit Directors and other members of the
College Leadership Team. The Associate Dean serves as a Senior
Officer of Central Michigan University and as the chief academic
officer of the College in the absence of the Dean.
General Statement of Duties
The Associate Dean provides support to the Dean in areas such
as, but not necessarily limited to: curriculum, budgeting,
planning, program development, space allocation and remodeling;
faculty reappointment, tenure, and promotion actions; faculty
development; recruiting of new faculty and staff; recruitment of
students; the acquisition of development monies; facilitating of
research and grant writing; and supervision of college staff.
The Associate Dean will be assigned leadership responsibility in
some of these areas, as determined by the College Dean. The
Associate Dean may be assigned other duties, reasonably related to
the operation of the College, at the discretion of the College Dean.
Required Qualifications:
Terminal degree and tenured at the level of associate or full
professor in a department/unit within the College of Communication
and Fine Arts; familiarity with the varied needs of the
departments/units within the college; demonstrated history of
high-quality teaching, scholarship/creative activity, and service;
ability and willingness to represent the interests of the College to
all constituencies; demonstrated commitment to collaboration with
members of the College and University community; demonstrated
successful interpersonal skills; well-developed oral and written
communication skills; demonstrated history of, and commitment to,
working successfully as part of a team; demonstrated leadership
skills; experience with mediation and conflict resolution;
successful prior administrative experience; demonstrated commitment
to diversity.
Desired Qualifications:
Experience with academic budgeting and planning; knowledge of
collective bargaining principles, particularly in higher education;
experience with successful implementation/application of information
technology to the academic enterprise; experience with fund raising
(preferably external).
